Food
We believe that a healthy, long and productive life requires good food! We strive to raise all of our food organically, both by individual household in our personal gardens and by group efforts for row crops, grain and hay. We are actively exploring innovative methods to improve our soil, by adding bio-nutrients, bio-char and nitrogen fixing plants. We rely on heirloom and improved varieties, integrated pest control, crop rotation and cover cropping. When we grow food together we not only achieve a quality product money cannot buy but we gain a sense of achievement and satisfaction that is often lacking in today's world. FEATURED FAVORITE:
CORN
Corn happens every year on the farm, weather and wildlife willing. The variety we grow is an 8 Row Flint, a heritage breed of outstanding flavor. It is an open pollinated, non-GMO heirloom variety of field corn. We depend on corn as did our ancient predecessors here in the Ohio Valley and we grow it much as they did, with no chemical inputs, relying instead on bio-nutrients, minerals and composted manure to produce the purest form of corn. Cooperating with our neighbors, we are able to plant, cultivate, harvest, guard and process the corn into masa (for tortillas) and cornmeal. We save our seed and replant only the best kernels from the best ears, increasing the adaptability to our soil and climate and assisting in the cycle of reproduction of this miracle food of the Americas. Beginning in Summer of 2018 we will be teaching a course on growing and using 8 Row Flint Corn, you can find more information on our COURSES page.
