holistic Land Management & Stewardship
As members of Wyatt Run Farm & Ecology Center, we are actively involved in food security. Several households raise most of their own food supply. We raise row crops, grain and cover crops on a group basis for primarily on-farm consumption.
We drink the water from our land and value purity. To that end we have developed on-farm water systems including farm ponds, springs, spring-stern collection systems and wells. Three creeks run through the property, one classified as pristine. We have taken steps to protect the watersheds and riparian zones by maintaining forested buffers, building grassland waterways and excluding development and domestic animals from the collection areas.
Our energy needs are met with solar, firewood and the grid. All of the homesteads are heated with wood. Some of them have solar systems with storage capacity and a few have ties to the grid. The outlying cabins have small solar systems or are completely rustic and rely on kerosene lamps for light. One of our long term goals is to build a micro-grid connecting the homes.
Our belief is that protecting the land from exploitative and extractive practices is paramount to a healthy and long life. Therefore we have employed organic agriculture since our inception in 1980. We acquired our mineral rights with the property and broke the in-perpetuity lease of our minerals in 1985. Since then we have managed our single oil and gas well. Recognizing that natural gas is a limited resource, we limit ourselves to cooking and heating water with it.
